LPs have been enjoying a comeback in recent years, and the vinyl record is the only format of music available that has recorded positive sales growth from 2009 to 2021. This is impressive, especially because the overall number of albums sold in all formats has been decreasing since 2007.

Data on the year-over-year changes in music sales in the United States from 2009 to 2021 show yearly increases in LP/vinyl album sales, which saw a significant growth of 51.4 percent between 2020 and 2021. Meanwhile, digital album sales are declining, with a unit sales drop of almost 24 percent in the last measured period.

RIAA data shows that 25-to-34-year-olds and 18-to-24-year-olds accounted for 19 and 16 per cent respectively of U.S. new vinyl sales in 2018. This is valuable to artists who are not being paid what they’d like to be on streaming services. For artists, selling other merchandise has become increasingly important.
